Google Rolls Out On-Device AI Protections to Detect Scams in Chrome and Android

Summary: Google is implementing advanced AI-driven measures to combat online scams across its platforms, including Chrome and Android. Utilizing the Gemini Nano model, Google aims to enhance its Safe Browsing feature significantly, providing users with immediate protection against emerging threats. With the capability to detect a variety of scams, these improvements are essential in today’s digital landscape, where malicious tactics are continually evolving.

Google’s Introduced AI-Powered Scam Detection

On May 5, 2025, Google announced the rollout of AI-enhanced countermeasures aimed at combating online scams across Chrome, Search, and Android platforms. This pivotal move harnesses the capabilities of Gemini Nano, Google’s on-device large language model (LLM), to bolster the existing Safe Browsing feature in Chrome 137.

How Gemini Nano Works

The application of the Gemini Nano model enables instant evaluation of web pages, offering real-time insights into risky websites. Google emphasizes that this technology allows for immediate protection, even for scams that are yet to be discovered. According to the company, “Gemini Nano’s LLM is well-suited for this task due to its ability to interpret the multifaceted characteristics of websites, thus enabling a quicker adaptation to new scam tactics.”

Current efforts focus on combating tech support scams, which have been notorious for misleading users into sharing personal and financial information under false pretenses. For instance, in 2023, reports indicated that over 40% of users fell victim to such scams, underlining the urgent need for robust security solutions.

AI-Driven Evaluation for Enhanced Security

The Gemini Nano technology evaluates pages for characteristics indicative of tech support scams, such as anomalous behavior linked to the keyboard lock API. By extracting these security signals, Google can effectively categorize web pages, aiding in determining whether they pose a threat.

“Our on-device model is intuitively designed to conserve resources. We carefully control when the model is activated and conduct the evaluation in an efficient manner,” explained members of the Google Chrome Security team. This ensures optimal performance without compromising the user experience.

Future Enhancements in Scam Detection

Google plans to expand its detection capabilities to encompass various forms of scams, such as those claiming package tracking and unpaid toll notices. Soon, users can expect these features to be available on Chrome for Android, enhancing safety in mobile browsing.

Recent updates indicate a substantial increase in Google’s ability to detect and block scams. The AI-powered system captures 20 times more deceptive pages than before, leading to an 80% drop in scams impersonating airline services and a 70% reduction in those mimicking government resources.

User Empowerment Through Notifications

In conjunction with these advancements, the new Chrome for Android notifications feature alerts users about potentially harmful and spammy notifications from malicious websites. Chrome now offers additional control, allowing users to manage unwanted notifications effectively.

With these proactive measures, Google positions itself as a steadfast guardian of user privacy and security, anticipating and addressing emerging risks in the digital realm.
