Microsoft Teams will soon block screen capture during meetings

Enhancing Cyber Security with Microsoft’s New Teams Feature

Microsoft is set to revolutionize online meeting security with a new Teams feature designed to prevent unauthorized screenshots during meetings. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of cyber security in digital communications.

    Automatic Safeguards for Sensitive Information

This innovative feature will automatically switch users joining from unsupported platforms into an audio-only mode, thereby safeguarding shared content from potential breaches. The rollout for Android, desktop, iOS, and web users globally is planned for July 2025, a significant step for those engaged in secure business communications.

“To address the issue of unauthorized screen captures during meetings, the Prevent Screen Capture feature ensures that if a user attempts to take a screen capture, the meeting window will turn black, thereby protecting sensitive information,” Microsoft shared in a recent Microsoft 365 roadmap update.

    Comprehensive Protection Beyond Screenshots

It’s crucial to note that while the feature will block screenshots, it will not completely eliminate risk; sensitive information shared during Teams meetings can still be captured by taking a photo. Organizations must advise users on the limitations of this feature and implement additional cyber security measures to protect against information leakage.

    Competitive Landscape in Secure Messaging

Last month, Meta introduced a similar feature in WhatsApp called “Advanced Chat Privacy,” which prevents users from saving media and exporting chat content. These developments indicate a significant industry-wide shift towards enhanced privacy controls in digital communication platforms.

    Upcoming Features in Microsoft Teams

Along with the Prevent Screen Capture feature, Microsoft is also planning to roll out additional security features such as a town hall screen privilege management update for Teams Rooms on Windows and interactive BizChat/Copilot Studio agents in meetings and calls. A Copilot feature is also in development to assist in generating audio overviews of transcribed meetings.

    Reinforcing Phishing Protections

In January, Microsoft pledged to enhance its Teams Chat brand impersonation protection feature, which alerts users about phishing attacks targeting organizations with external Teams access. This feature is slated for general availability by mid-February 2025 and serves to bolster the cyber security framework for Microsoft 365 admins.

The Growing Impact of Microsoft Teams

At the previous Enterprise Connect conference, Microsoft announced that Teams has surpassed 320 million monthly active users, covering 181 markets and 44 languages. This expansive reach emphasizes the importance of introducing robust security features as more users rely on the platform for their communication needs.
