Steam Client Now Enables Proton by Default for Games without Native Linux Builds

    Introduction

Valve has just rolled out a significant update for the Steam Client, offering exciting enhancements specifically for Linux gamers. This update not only defaults Proton for non-native Linux games but also introduces new performance features and improved accessibility options. Read on to discover how these changes can elevate your gaming experience on Linux.

Key Updates to the Steam Client for Linux Gamers

    Proton Enabled by Default

The latest Steam Client update, released on June 30th, 2025, automatically enables Proton for games lacking a native Linux version. This enhancement simplifies the gaming experience, making it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite titles on Linux without manually tweaking settings.

    In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor

One of the most noteworthy features of this update is the introduction of the In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor. Initially available only on Windows, this tool provides essential data about frame rates, CPU, and GPU performance. Although some metrics are hardware-specific and Windows-centric, Valve promises users will see a frame rate counter at a minimum. Users can customize this feature by navigating to Settings -> In Game.

Improved Steam Input and Accessibility Features

This update also enhances Steam Input by allowing users to bind additional buttons on various gaming controllers, including the FlyDigi and 8BitDo series. Moreover, a newly added accessibility settings page in Big Picture Mode features UI Scaling, High Contrast Mode, and Reduced Motion options, addressing previously mislabeled UI elements for enhanced user experience.

    Performance Enhancements and Bug Fixes

Alongside these exciting features, the update promises reduced startup times for users with numerous non-Steam games, improved audio resilience, and enhanced compatibility with non-Steam Deck devices. Various bugs affecting Big Picture Mode, Steam Chat, Steam Input, SteamVR, and Steam Overlay have also been addressed.

How to Update Your Steam Client

To take advantage of these new features, simply navigate to the Steam menu and select Check for Steam Client Updates. A blue notification will appear, prompting you to download the update. After the download completes, click Apply and Restart to install the changes and reboot your Steam Client.
